Prune adds a Prune page to Confluence Cloud administration. It deletes old page and blog post versions by rule, empties the trash by age, and can do both every day. Only Confluence administrators can open it.
1. Install
- A Confluence site administrator opens Apps > Explore more apps, searches for Prune and selects Get app (or Try it free).
- Review the requested permissions and confirm. No configuration is needed.
- Open Confluence administration (gear icon) and choose Prune in the apps section.
2. Overview
Overview counts pages, blog posts, old versions and trash items per space, and lists the pages and blog posts with the most versions. It changes nothing and works without a license.
3. Delete old versions
- Open Old versions. Set Keep the last N versions, Only versions older than D days, or both.
- Choose all spaces or pick some.
- Press Dry run. The table shows, for every page and blog post, how many versions would be deleted and kept.
- To delete, press Delete versions and type
DELETEto confirm. The job runs in the background; you can stop it.
The current version is never deleted. Confluence renumbers the remaining versions after each delete; Prune re-reads the version list before every single delete, so it always removes the right versions, even on pages edited while a job runs.
4. Empty the trash
Open Trash and pick a space. Purge selected items, everything, or items Prune first saw in the trash more than D days ago. Confluence does not record when an item was trashed, so Prune notes the first day it sees each item there (it checks every space once a day). Right after installation every trash item counts as new. Items restored meanwhile are skipped.
5. Daily rules and history
In Schedule & history, turn on a daily version rule and/or a daily trash rule (at least 1 day). The last 30 runs are listed with a CSV report (content ID, space, what was done) that you can copy.
Permissions
- Only Confluence administrators can open Prune, start jobs or save rules; every request is checked on the server.
- Jobs run as the app, so daily rules work without anyone signed in.
- Scopes: read spaces, pages and blog posts; delete pages, blog posts and content versions; read users (administrator check); app storage.
Limits
- Confluence Cloud only.
- Deleting a version or purging an item is permanent; Confluence cannot bring it back. Always run a dry run first.
- Attachments and their versions are not touched.
- One job runs at a time.
- When the license is inactive (for example after the trial), Overview and dry runs keep working; deleting, purging and daily rules are off.
